SIKLAB Media, Filipino Migrant Center, and the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns are collaborating with immigrant youth filmmakers and artists to produce “Liwanag (Light)”, a
documentary and storybook that highlights the plight of Filipina frontline workers in LA during
the COVID-19 pandemic whose lives could not simply go back to "normal" as they continue to
experience physical and mental health issues, workplace challenges, and trauma from racist
attacks against the Asian community.
The film features the story of three Filipina immigrant
women - Nerissa, Mary, and Jennie - who experienced the challenging impacts of the COVID-19
pandemic. Nerissa is a caregiver for a big facility who experienced unjust and
unsafe working conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic and whose family also became a
victim of an Asian-related hate crime. Mary is an ICU Nurse who worked during the height of
the pandemic but also advocated for safe patient care and better working conditions for
healthcare workers. Jennie is a donut shop worker who became the breadwinner for her family
and relatives who lost their job during the pandemic. All three stories show what it means to find light in the midst of challenging times.
